Los Angeles Fashion Week Spring '05: Shakti by Jacquelyne Love
The Lake Tahoe, Nev.–based headquarters of the Shakti by Jacquelyne Love label is far from Southern California’s glitz and surf. But designer Love examined the reasons why the world adores the California look during her Spring 2005 fashion show, held Oct. 27 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.
The first reason was beach culture. Love mixed classic bikini tops with everything from chic capri pantsuits to graffiti-print mesh wide-leg trousers. The beach theme was underscored by plenty of remixed tunes from The Beach Boys courtesy of the designer’s husband, Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love.
The second reason was red-carpet glitz. Shakti’s gowns, including a sunburst embroidered piqueacute; and chiffon strapless gown, captured an easygoing glamour that spelled out California chic.
The 40-look collection, representing the designer’s third season, featured an emphasis on softer, romantic materials such as chiffon and more detailed styling, including ruffles and pintuck pleats.
Love said the collection’s focus on details and sand-and-surf themes was the best representation of her vision for Shakti.
“It’s more me,” she said. “I’m more confident this season.” —A.A.
