L.A. Fashion Week Fall '05: Shakti by Jacquelyne Love

For Fall/Winter 2005, designer Jacquelyne Love switched gears, creating a look for her Shakti collection that was more “La Dolce Vita” than Malibu. This was a departure from her Spring 2005 collection, which showcased free-spirited clothes that embraced a beach-friendly aesthetic.

Love debuted 39 looks on March 16 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. Using the classic looks of Sophia Loren and Princess Grace as inspiration, Love worked with leather, lace, shearling and silk to create extravagant clothes with body-hugging silhouettes. She showed pencil skirts with plum swing coats and boucleacute; jackets. She often exposed bellybuttons and torsos, adding a dash of the risqueacute; to her updated classic looks.

For cold weather clothing, the collection included puffer jackets, fur-hooded shearling jackets and chocolate leather dresses with fur cuffs. Eveningwear stressed strapless dresses such as a chocolate gown with a lace and leather bodice and a black lace and silk dress. Satin and lace were the primary materials for the collection’s pants, which included a bronze stretch-satin style, a noir wide-leg style, and black lace pants topped with a black lace and leather bustier. —Andrew Asch
