Hurley X Brandon Boyd: Surfing, Art and Activism
Hurley and Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd have launched an exclusive art-inspired T-shirt collection to benefit H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everywhere). The fashion, art and surf communities gathered last night to celebrate the launch at the Sea-thos Foundation headquarters in Venice, Calif. Brandon Boyd, Bob Hurley and friends fêted the launch with a cocktail party and art show featuring Boyd’s original works and collection of T-shirts.
A mutual appreciation for surfing, art and music inspired the collaboration between the longtime friends. Boyd, the lead singer of Incubus, is not only a musician but an accomplished artist and surfer. The collaboration fuses his love for the ocean with art and the desire to make a difference.
"We have done projects together in the past but it seemed like it was time we truly put our collective heads together to make a real dent in a situation that affects us all, most importantly the swiftly growing problems in our oceans,” said Boyd in a statement about the collaboration with Hurley. “We start herein as surfers and musicians and are moving forward as stewards of our island.”
Three original watercolor and ink illustrations convey the ever-mounting issue of plastic pollution in our oceans. The art has been printed in soy ink on recycled organic cotton T-shirts available at select retailers and Hurley.com. In addition, an exclusive t-shirt and water bottle will be available in the Midwest at the Buckle on April 1 to coincide with Earth Day on the 22nd.
“We’re passionate about the work we do making clothes and connecting with kids, but our brand comes from the ocean and it’s sort of our responsibility to be a care taker,” said Bob Hurley. “It’s such a big issue. Sometimes you feel like you can’t do anything, but doing one little thing is cool. Maybe don’t use a plastic bottle, maybe don’t wash your car that week. Any little thing [helps.] We’re not really saving the world, but maybe we can make a difference.
For Hurley, H20 is a big initiative. As part of the collaboration, Hurley and the Buckle have both made efforts to be water bottle free. According to Laura Wasser, Hurley’s VP of Marketing, both companies have installed water coolers in key locations. At the Buckle that adds up to approximately 700 employees that are no longer using plastic water bottles. Hurley also supports Waves for Water which distributes water filters throughout the world. “We support anything that’s really about clean water. It can be clean drinking water [or] ocean clean ups,” she said. “We’re always [active] in-house because we really believe before you tell everybody else they have to do something we should probably really know what we’re doing here and be active,” said Wasser.
Hurley will celebrate the launch on April 2 with an art show at the Hurley )( Space Gallery in Costa Mesa. The show will feature a mural of Boyd’s art work on the walls of the gallery space. The event is open to the public.
