New Look Planned for Hawthorne Mall

The vacant Hawthorne Plaza shopping mall in Hawthorne, Calif., is slated to get a new look—its first since closing 17 years ago—which will incorporate retail, entertainment and housing in an open-air format.

According to The Daily Breeze, the Hawthorne Council has approved financial support for the development, which faces Hawthorne Boulevard and runs between 120th Street to 126th Street.

The $500 million remodel will include demolishing the enclosed mall to make way for a more-than-1 million-square-foot space that will include large and small retailers, as well as restaurants, a movie theater, a gym, a bowling alley, office space and 600 housing units.

The plans call for construction to start next year. In the meantime, you can virtually tour the shuttered mall via the Tom Explores Los Angeles video below (hat tip to Curbed LA).
