Nick Verreos’ Fashion By the Book
Looking for advice, insight and a little gossip about the fashion industry? You are in luck. Nick Verreos—fashion designer, red carpet commentator, former fashion design instructor and “Project Runway” contestant—is here to help.
“A Passion for Fashion: Achieving Your Fashion Dreams One Thread at a Time” was written by Verreos with his partner in business and life, David Paul, and features a lovely foreword by “Project Runway” mentor Tim Gunn.
The book takes the reader through Verreos’ life in fashion, from his childhood in Venezuela to his career as co-designers with Paul of their Los Angeles–based collection Nikolaki. There are plenty of stops along the way, from Verreos’ studies in political science at the University of California Los Angeles (he considered following in his diplomat father’s footsteps) to his fashion design studies at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, where he currently serves as guest lecturer and spokesperson. Verreos takes readers behind the scenes of his work as a red carpet commentator. There’s even a chapter dishing about Verreos’ stint on the second season of “Project Runway.”
The book is part memoir, part how-to with advice on everything from sketching to creating cost-sheets to weighing the benefits of putting on a runway show or hiring a public relations agency.
Verreos and Paul were signing books on Aug. 15 at FIDM, where fans picked up copies of the book and got to see some recent Nikolaki designs. There were even a few impromptu sketches and draping examples done by Verreos and Paul earlier in the day.
