FLYING FIRE DEPT.

Sky High Rescue by Helicopter in LA's Fashion District

One place you don't want to have a medical crisis is atop a 270-foot crane surrounded by a big hole.

A 50-year-old man, working at a construction site at 825 S. Hill St. was injured Thursday afternoon while he was on a crane being used to build a new 50-story apartment complex being constructed by Onni Group on what was a former parking lot.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and climbed an extension ladder to assess the situation, said LA Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart. Even though the man was not critically injured, firefighters felt he couldn't make it down the ladder so they called in a helicopter that swooped over the crane, lowering a hoist and getting the man into the aircraft.

The unidentified worker was airlifted to County-USC Medical Center where he was in fair condition.

The whir of helicopter blades that reverberated around the canyon of buildings sounded like something out of an action movie, but it turned out to be real.
