Italian Vogue’s Eye for Fashion
Ever wonder what editors look for when scouting new design talent? Sara Maino, senior fashion editor at Vogue Italia, spoke at a recent fashion conference in Russia about what catches her eye—and what advice she has for up-and-coming talent.
One of Maino’s tips caught my eye as being especially important (and not so often discussed):
“Don't be afraid to stay small.”
So often I see new brands—especially new brands launched by experienced designers—start out with a full collection: sportswear, outerwear, shoes, bags, the works.
I say keep it simple. Start with one category (or, if you’re really new to the business, start with one item). Win over retailers with a small taste of what you have to offer then build from that.
Fashionista has coverage of the rest of Maino’s advice—all excellent intel for new designers and emerging brands.
