Nike x Sacai Collab: Fashion x Function
Athletic giant Nike teamed up with designer Chitose Abe, founder of the Japanese brand Sacai, to launch Nike x Sacai, a new collaboration that adds a fashionable twist to athletic apparel.
According to Dezeen, Abe drew from the Nike archives (including running, tennis and American football apparel) to create the collection, which Nike describes as “fluid reinventions of traditional silhouettes.” The 8-piece collection “represents [Abe’s] ongoing exploration of the interplay between masculinity and femininity, combined with a reverence for movement.”
Hat tip to Slate, which ran a scathing review of the collection, saying it’s “comical and insulting to female athletes everywhere.”
I totally disagree with Slate’s assessment. But then again, I didn’t look at the pieces and think “that would be perfect for pilates!” I think they’re flat out beautiful garments that take the sportswear trend in a whole new direction.
But just in case you think this is athleticwear for non-athletes, Nike and Abe created a video of the garments in action.
