Barbie X Andy Warhol at Ron Robinson
Barbie – the iconic doll – has been busy for the past few years. We’ve seen versions of the doll such as entrepreneur Barbie, the Tokidoki brand’s Japanese animation Barbie. There also was Barbie Photo Fashion. It’s a doll that also serves as a 0.3 megapixel camera. With all of these different Barbies, is the world ready for Andy Warhol Barbie?
Such a doll took a bow at the Ron Robinson boutique in Santa Monica, Calif. on Dec. 3. Wearing a vinyl jacket, a bleach blonde Andy Warhol shag, equipped with cool shades and paint brushes and a camera, the Mattel doll reportedly sold out in minutes at Ron Robinson. The doll was part of limited edition collection Barbie x Andy Warhol, which made a debut at the high end boutique.
Like most business deals, this collection started with a relationship. Ron Robinson , the founder of the namesake Ron Robinson boutique, had been talking with Elizabeth Spencer, Mattel’s senior licensing director – softlines, on doing an unique line. Inspiration came in a brainstorm when Spencer remembered that Warhol made a painting of Barbie in 1986.
Robinson contacted a bunch of his store’s vendors to participate in the new line. It’s definitely a Los Angeles line. Most of the vendors are headquartered in Los Angeles. Their manufacturing plants also are located in the City of Angels too.
The vendors included nOir Jewelry, Lisa Pearl offered pillows, Electric & Rose manufactured some leggings, Fringe made vases, APOTHIA made candles, Darner did socks, Lysa Nalin did scarves and blankets, Chaser did T-shirts, Shaffer LA did bags.
Also seen at the gala party was Meghan King Edmonds of The Real Housewives of Orange County reality television program and designer Maggie Barry.
