Fashion & Feminism

Sexism in the fashion industry? You don’t say.

Actress Emma Watson recently teamed up with Vogue to produce a video focusing on gender equality in the fashion industry.

Last year, Watson, a United Nations Global Goodwill Ambassador, spoke about feminism at the UN, when she launched her HeForShe campaign for gender equality.

The recently released “Fashion on Gender Equality” video features Watson posing questions to designers Stella McCartney, Jonathan Saunders, Bella Freud and Erdem Moraglioglu.

In addition to gender equality, the conversation also touches on age, size and race equality in the industry.

The Cut, New York magazine’s fashion blog, raises some good points about the issue in its piece about Watson’s video:

“[F]ashion is an industry that is still most strongly associated with women. But in fact, there's a surprising paucity of female representation, both in head design roles and on the business side. And fashion still tends to prefer boy wonders over young female talent.”

As fashion folks like to say about the dissemination of trends, there must be something in the air. Next week at the MAGIC trade show in Las Vegas, BB Dakota founder Katharine Brandes will be speaking on a panel titled “It’s Only Fashion: Empowering Creativity With Female Voices.” The seminar is scheduled for Aug. 18at 10:30 a.m. in the Las Vegas Convention Center.
