French Quarter Meets Fashion District
The LA Fashion District now has a little New Orleans style since Preux & Proper opened at 840 S. Spring St., the former site of The Parish restaurant and, before that, Angelique Café. Located at the spot where Main and Spring Street meet, the two-story brick building with wrought iron accents does have a New Orleans look to it.
The space is divided into two concepts, Preux, located on the first floor, which features an “open air frozen daiquiri bar [that] channels the good times and great drinks of the French Quarter.”
Upstairs at Proper, Executive Chef Michael Ruiz is serving “New Orleans flavor-infused” fare such as smoked shrimp beignets, crab cakes and fresh Gulf Coast seafood. There are fried oyster po’boys, grilled short ribs served with Cajun kimchee and a steam pot of Andouille sausage, crab and crawfish, as well as a muffuletta plate with cured meats and crispy frog legs marinated with Anaheim chili, sauce picante and coriander seeds. Daily specials include oysters on the half shell, moonshine shooters, crab claws and lobster cocktails.
You can pair that with mixologist Pablo Moix’s moonshine-based bar drinks like the Hurricane, Julep and Old Fashioned, or try Louisiana beer Abita, which the restaurant has on tap.
