Rent the Runway Gets Bigger
Fashion isn't just about skinny Minnies.
After four years of renting out evening gowns and fancy dresses, the Rent the Runway website is adding plus sizes to its vast closet of more than 25,000 dresses and accessories from 165 designers. They can be rented for four days or eight days.
The New York-based website, started in 2009 by two Harvard Business School grads, announced it will have an assortment of more than 40 styles in sizes 14 to 22 from five top designers.
Badgley Mischka, Carmen Marc Valvo and Theia have created dresses exclusively for Rent the Runway with the large-size customer in mind. Existing dress styles from Kay Unger and Adrianna Papell will also be for rent, with prices ranging from $50 to $200. There is everything from a little black dress to sequin and lace outfits to evening gowns.
"When we launched Rent the Runway, we didn't fully understand that our business was going to be about so much more than saving money, but rather, feeling empowered. Every woman deserves to feel beautiful before the most important occasions in her life and every woman regardless of her size should have her choice of the designer dress that gives her the most confidence," said Jennifer Hyman, chief executive and co-founder of Rent the Runway.
Rent the Runway has been described as the "Netflix of fashion."
