GLOBAL COMPETITION WINNER
Santa Monica Place's Big Awards
Call it a delayed reaction.
Earlier this year, Santa Monica Place mall was honored for its architecture by International Council of Shopping Centers. The ICSC considered architecture of malls across the world for the competition.
On Oct. 9, the ICSC held a ceremony for the architectural awards at the beachside mall. Being honored was Santa Monica Place owners Macerich Co. and architects The Jerde Partnership and Omniplan Architects.
They won two gold ICSC U.S. Design & Development Awards, as well as Best-of-the-Best VIVA Award in design & development, which was announced during ICSC’s RECon real estate convention in May. Santa Monica Place mall debuted in 2010 after a $265 million remodel of the mall's former 1980s-era enclosed building.
The awards specifically celebrated how the open air center’s landmark buildings make a statement, yet how they also blend seamlessly into the urban environment of Santa Monica, as well as the beach.
Santa Monica Place hosts designer stores such as Alexander McQueen, boutiques such as Kitson department stores such as Bloomingdale’s and popular mall stores such as Hot Topic.
