Growing up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Alex Um got his start in the fashion industry working in his parents’ showrooms, where he did business in four languages: Portuguese, Korean, Spanish and English.
With family in Los Angeles, he moved to the City of Angels to open a business, and he did what came naturally—running a showroom in a place where people spoke Korean, Spanish and English. On Jan. 1, Um opened the Korner Runway Inc. showroom, which focuses on young contemporary fashion. Most of the lines he represents are headquartered in Los Angeles and manufactured in United States.
One of Korner Runway’s top lines is Sage, which is made in Los Angeles. Sage features looks such as tunic dresses with long sleeves and lace dresses. Wholesale price points range from $15.75 to $27.75. Another look is by Los Angeles–based line Caramela, which offers tops with checkered prints, chevron prints and polka dots, along with dresses. Wholesale price points range from $13.75 to $20.75. Another line is Andrée by Unit, which offers a whole collection of looks but also features items such as maxi-dresses. The label Joy & Co. offers styles such as dresses, crochet tops, stretch, linen tops and blouses with chevron prints. Other lines offered by the showroom are Zouk and Lila.
The Korner showroom has done business with Brazilian retailers, yet Um does not forecast that his Brazilian business will be significant. While the two countries’ styles can be inspired by the other, different weather systems and seasons require different modes of dress. “The fashions are completely different,” he said.
