Mobile App Lets Consumers Buy Right off the Magazine Page
Imagine seeing an item in a magazine, snapping a photo with your mobile phone, and immediately finding stores and e-tail sites where you can buy that item.
That’s the concept behind mobile shopping app Magnetique, a free multi-platform app created to help consumers find products at local retailers through print fashion magazines.
The user simply takes a photo of the item on an editorial page, with an option of entering the magazine issue and page number, then receives on her cell phone a message with the stores that carry that coveted piece.
Consumer publication InStyle has already partnered up with the geo-location app, and Glamour included Magnetique’s features in its June issue. Magnetique connects with inventory systems of major retailers such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Dillard’s and Saks Fifth Avenue,as well as smaller boutiques, said Magnetique Chief Executive Officer Martha Pease.
Magnetique also serves as a social-networking hub, where members can share their fashion-related inspirations through Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
The application can be downloaded from Google Play and iTunes and used on any mobile device or computer.
According to Pease, 18 million magazine copies are sold each month in the U.S.
There is still a strong loyal readership within the magazine industry, she said, comparing the level of consumer engagement to bricks-and-mortar stores that draw shoppers who enjoy the retail experience.
If a reader “sees beautiful things in a magazine, gets excited about shopping and can’t find the item, it becomes a disappointment,” Pease said. “There becomes a gap in what can be a great experience.”
