Creativity on the Map at Hong Kong Fashion Week
Prints and bright colors were everywhere at Hong Kong Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013.
Scores of designers from Asia and Europe showed their collections on the runway during the Jan. 14–17 show.
British designer Holly Fulton created her own colorful prints that incorporated sea-foam turquoise with navy blue or a sunny yellow while blending terracotta orange with yellow.
Hong Kong–based Johanna Ho, who studied at the venerable Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, had a more subtle color palette that veered toward solid shades to accent the girliness in her line.
One of her standout items was a pair of bright-blue cropped pants accented with looped trim on the side. Ho is known for her ruffled accents, which have earned her the nickname “The Queen of Ruffles.”
Nana Aganovich and her partner, Brooke Taylor, traveled from Paris to show their Aganovich collection, carried at the high-end Hong Kong store Joyce. The international duo veered toward black-and-white contrasts and dark-green colors. Gypsies were their inspiration for their recent collection, made in France.
Espen Salberg, a Norwegian designer now living in Bali, Indonesia, has a background in dance, having created the dress Jennifer Lopez wore in the movie dance scene from “Shall We Dance.”
His creations are always dramatic with lots of flair and sequins. His most recent collection is called “Sunset Soiree,” incorporating the warm colors seen in a dusky sunset.
On the runway too were several young designers who packed a punch. Andy Ho had fun with traditional Chinese wax seals, and Elizabeth Lin went over the top with yards of print fabric that evoked a Marie Antoinette feel.
