Fire Guts Sharp Fabric Co.

Los Angeles Fire Department trucks were called before 2 p.m. on April 19 to put out the reigniting embers of a giant pile fabric and debris, which were part of a fire that raged in the early morning of April 18 at Sharp Fabric Co., a garment -industry business in downtown Los Angeles.

LAFD tractors pushed a half city block–sized pile of fabric and debris into the middle of the street to prevent further destruction of the one-story Sharp Fabric Co. building. The LAFD had closed off the area in front of Sharp Fabric Co., which is located in the middle of E. Seventh Street between Crocker and Towne streets.

There were no injuries in the fire, and the LAFD had not tabulated losses from the Sharp Fabric Co. blaze by press time, said Brian Humphrey, LAFD spokesman. The blaze started in the rear of the one-story Sharp Fabric Co. The fire was reported 2:07 a.m. on April 18, and it took firefighters 90 minutes to control it. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
