Rodeo Walk of Style Event Draws Famous Crowd
Who: Rodeo Drive Committee and the city of Beverly Hills
What: Rodeo Drive Walk of Style, honoring Diana Vreeland
When: Sept. 10
Where: Via Rodeo, Beverly Hills
The scene: A distinguished fashion crowd turned out to honor legendary editor and fashion icon Diana Vreeland as she was inducted into the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style. James Galanos, Peggy Moffitt, Fred Hayman and Beverly Hills Mayor William W. Brien joined members of the Vreeland family, the Rodeo Drive Committee and the City Council for the plaque unveiling and induction ceremony.
Vreeland posthumously joins an elite group that has been bestowed the honor, which recognizes style legends for their contributions to fashion and entertainment. Valentino Garavani, Tom Ford, Edith Head, Iman, Missoni, Manolo Blahnik, Herb Ritts, Mario Testino, Cartier and Princess Grace of Monaco are just a few who have been honored with a permanent plaque on Rodeo Drive.
Vreeland’s son, Tim, accepted the award and spoke of his mother’s life, career and accomplishments. The event coincides with the Sept. 21 release of documentary film “Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel.” The producer and director of the film, Lisa Immordino Vreeland, the wife of Diana Vreeland's grandson, spoke before a short clip of the film was played. During Vreeland’s illustrious career, she was fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar before becoming editor-in-chief of Vogue. She created iconic fashion editorials with Richard Avedon, Louise Dahl-Wolfe and David Bailey; launched the career of Twiggy; discovered Lauren Bacall; and was fashion adviser to Jackie O. Following Vogue, she was asked to be a special consultant to help revitalize The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. There she left an indelible mark, popularizing and dramatizing the museum’s historical collections with exhibitions that have established the notion of “fashion as high art.”
