LA Fashion Week Spring 2013: NUVULA
The 1960s met the future at Nuvula’s Spring presentation. Columbian-born sister design duo of Rebeca and Vanesa Victoria debuted the collection, titled “A '60s Exploration,” during Concept Fashion Week LA on Oct. 13. The presentation featured models standing on colorful printed platforms decorated with balloons to set a whimsical mood.
The collection fused varied influences of the ‘60s, such as Woodstock, sci-fi films and “It Girls” Twiggy and Brigitte Bardot. Combined with a fascination with armored costumes and affinity to feminine design, the look was an original take on the season. The palette ranged from white, subtle earth tones and light blues to saturated hues, floral prints and playful polka dots.Being eco-conscious, the designers utilized sustainable fabrics, including silk, hemp and bamboo as well as a special rayon burlap. Silhouettes were retro meets futuristic. Think ‘60s A-line shapes, form-fitting body con dresses, and tailored tops and crop pants. Details such as piping, godets and color blocking were key. And experimentation with origami pleating techniques created structure on corsets and dresses.—N. Jayne Seward
