Fred Segal Brand Rights to Sandow Media

Since the 1960s, Fred Segal has been a retail experience only to be found in Los Angeles County, but soon Fred Segal might be spread throughout the world.

On May 3, New York–based Sandow Media announced its acquisition to the worldwide rights to the Fred Segal brand. The deal includes the rights to intellectual property, development of a new e-commerce platform for the pioneering retailer’s e-commerce property (www.fredsegal.com), and development of Fred Segal-branded apparel and products—as well as new retail stores worldwide.

Fred Segal Managing Partner Michael Segal said Sandow Media has the right stuff to create a higher profile for the Fred Segal brand. The Segal family refused a myriad of offers to expand the company since the 1960s.

Sandow Media Chairman and Chief Executive Adam I. Sandow said his company will not change the brand and DNA of Fred Segal. “My company is privileged to be entrusted with this legacy and will continue the Segal family’s vision as we expand the brand globally,” Sandow said.

Sandow’s design management agency, Culture + Commerce, led by President Michele Caniato, will manage all licensing deals for Fred Segal globally. Sandow and Culture + Commerce put together the deal that placed Phillipe Starck in Target. Other Sandow clients include Puma, MAC, SLS Hotels, Tumi, Yves Behar and Kravitz Design.—Andrew Asch
