Gen Art Celebrates the New Garde
Elkin’s Fall collection and female empowerment were the focus of Gen Art’s event last night at Le Petit Ermitage. This season Gen Art selected Elkin as its New Garde Los Angeles' honoree and it was a fabulous evening indeed. The event, which was held in partnership with I Am That Girl and Ciroc Vodka, was hosted by actress Sophia Bush and there were plenty of starlets in attendance.
Brie Larson, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Kate Voegele are just a few who attended the cocktail party and dinner on the rooftop of the chic hotel in West Hollywood. Z Berg and special guest DJ, Becka Diamond, performed for the “girls only” crowd and I Am That Girl co-founders, Alexis Jones and Emily Greener, spoke about the organization which builds a trusting and empowering community for girls around the world.
Elkin's sister design-duo, Kara and Brit Smith, said they were inspired by science fiction to create their fourth collection. The sci-fi theme follows their signature literary inspiration each season. “Each piece is based off of what we saw our science fiction girl wearing,” said Kara. The collection was made from silk, leather and a galactic brocade that reflected an alternate reality. Silhouettes were streamlined such as dresses in column-like shapes with high cut slits and a metallic blazer paired with a chic black top and skirt. Contrasting design elements continued the science fiction theme.
The designers, who create elaborate mood boards each season, like to explain their thought process to customers. “We always create a play list and our reading list before we design,” said Brit. The lists are included on hang tags so buyers can interpret their mood and inspiration. “When we listen to it and we read it, we literally create our own world in our head. So it’s not literal it’s interpretive.”
