L.A. Independent Fashion Consortium
At The Echo nightclub on March 15, host Clint Catalyst said that the LA Independent Fashion Consortium was a showcase for an “alternative” breed of clothing that is locally grown. Indeed, there was a visible handmade quality to what came down the runway, as seen in Mortimer’s mismatching sweaters patched together by whip stitching and Rico Adair’s dresses with visible overlock seams.
Mortimer opened the show with the widest variety of designs of the night. Canvas camouflage, sweater fabric and flannel jackets appeared to be sourced from second-hand stores and repurposed. The ornate beading and sequins placement on a series of sheer party dresses was clever. Pleasure Doing Business evolved its signature bandage skirts with the addition of bandage bustier tops and textured patterns on the bands. Rico Adair closed the show with long and short T-shirt dresses and dresses made from men’s shirting, most of which followed a similar design continuity of being cut vertically straight down the middle and horizontally across the chest like an empire waist.—Rhea Cortado
