Jen Awad at Concept L.A.
“Hot Mess” was the name of Jen Awad’s Fall 2012 collection, exhibited at Concept L.A. Fashion Week at Ace Gallery Los Angeles March 10, but funky humor aside, it was the most sophisticated collection of the emerging designer’s career.
Awad left behind the tomboyish biker jackets and the puckish humor of the hot pants of her past collections in favor of feminine looks with a rock ’n’ roll edge. Think Jackie Kennedy jackets and matching miniskirts, both given rock ’n’ roll update with bondage zippers.
The collection’s silhouettes evoke a retro 1940s to 1960s look—down to the high-waisted, pinup-style briefs. The 21-look collection featured bustier dresses, floral nightgown-inspired dresses, alpaca wool coats and dresses, and miniskirts constructed out of silver lame.
The rock ’n’ roll, bondage and classic style was meant for a multifaceted woman, Awad said. “It’s about the girl who stays out all night and does not know when to stop. It’s about the girl spotted on the walk of shame. You shouldn’t be ashamed to look beautiful when doing it.”—Andrew Asch
