Quiksilver Opens New Women's store in Malibu Lumber Yard

Women ruled the wooden deck of the Malibu Lumber Yard during the Quiksilver store opening party on Tuesday. Inside the first flagship store for the women’s division of the brand, customers could see a deeper look into the design process conceived by Creative Director John Moore and muse/collaborative artist Serena Mitnik-Miller, both of whom were present at the opening.

Fun facts learned at the party:

1. According to Quiksilver VP of Sales and Marketing, Kenna Florie, loads of people don't know that Quiksilver and Roxy are part of the same company. Seriously. That's what their market research said. So they opened Quiksilver's Women's division because they saw an opportunity to capitalize on Quiksilver's brand name recognition, for a female customer.

2. When Quiksilver signed the lease at the Malibu Lumber Yard, it didn't know what brand would go into the space. It was rumored to be a VSTR store (the men's contemporary line founded by Kelly Slater, inspired by travel and the top of the Quiksilver pyramid of brands). The company decided on Quiksilver's women's division because it felt that a women's store would be a better fit for the location neighboring James Perse, Intermix and Kitson.

3.Ten percent of the sales gained from a special collection of Quiksilver product will benefit Wishtoyo Foundation, a non-profit that "works to protect and preserve the culture and history of coastal communities."

4. They sure had a lot of fun tracking down home accessories. The green pendant lamps are not reproductions, they are original vintage. And the oak wood floors are made from reused wood taken from a cabin in Pennsylvania.

Before Pinterest, people used to do this by hand. One corner of thestore is covered in storyboard corkboard and pins of fabric swatches, muses, prints and drawings of the collection.
