Hong Kong Fashion Week Features a Range of Worldwide Designers
While couture fashion shows were taking place in Europe, Hong Kong was staging its own parade of designers at Hong Kong Fashion Week for Autumn/Winter.
The Jan. 16–19 event, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, held 20 fashion shows that coincided with a giant trade show for apparel factories primarily from China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia and Pakistan, as well as other regions.
This year 1,900 exhibitors from 25 countries participated in the trade show section, compared with 2,000 exhibitors from 28 countries the year before.
On the fashion front, Ika, a designer from Indonesia who now lives in Hong Kong, kicked off the first day of catwalk festivities in a show called “Beauty and the Beast.”
The collection was filled with contrast, seen in scads of black-and-white creations that employed Ika’s love of fabric texture. Designs were enhanced with piping and diagonal lines.
That evening, four designers from different parts of the world converged on the runway for “Hong Kong Fashion Extravaganza.” The show featured Hong Kong’s Hidy Ng, London’s Craig Lawrence, Paris’ Risto Bimbiloski and Shanghai’s Qi Gang. The first Asian face of Dior, Hong Kong supermodel Grace Yu, modeled clothes created by Hidy Ng.
