American Apparel Sales Up in December
Los Angeles–based retailer and manufacturer American Apparel saw its total net sales for December rise 15 percent to $56.3 million.
Total net sales for the quarter increased 10 percent to $157.9 million.
The company saw a 25 percent surge in comp-store sales for its online division and an 11 percent increase in same-store sales in its bricks-and-mortar stores in December. Net sales in the company’s wholesale division increased 25 percent in December.
“In December, we continued to build momentum in our business,” said Dov Charney, chairman and chief executive officer. “Our sales exceeded plans in all channels, and we saw good progress in our wholesale channel across a broad spectrum of customers. Our retail-sales increases were also broad based, with notably large increases in the U.S., in all Asian markets and in Australia. Our product is resonating well with our customers, both in stores and online. During the quarter we opened three new stores in the U.K., including one in Westfield, London and two store-in-store locations at the venerable Selfridges department-store chain. We are excited about our progress in 2011 and expect to build on our recent successes in the coming year.”
As of the end of 2011, American Apparel operates 249 retail stores in 20 countries. The company employs about 10,000 workers.—Alison A. Nieder
