Macy’s Klein Retires, Setting Off Changes in Macy’s Execs

Macy’s Inc. announced that Ron Klein, its chief stores officer, will retire effective March 31, bringing an end to a 36-year career with Macy’s, which included a stint as chairman and chief executive of Macy’s East. The Macy’s East division operations, along with the operations of other Macy’s regional divisions, were brought under the aegis of the main Macy’s nameplate in 2006, when Macy’s reorganized and sought to become a national retailer.

Klein’s successor will be Peter Sachse, who worked as the retail giant’s chief marketing officer and chairman of Macys.com. He’ll also be responsible for the company’s omni-channel strategy, which brings together the retailer’s bricks-and-mortar, online, and mobile sales functions. Executive Vice President for Marketing Martine Reardon will succeed Sachse and become the company’s chief marketing officer.

The online division will be a high priority. Jeffrey Gennette, Macy’s chief merchandising officer, will also assume additional responsibility for overseeing Macys.com and marketing. The former president, merchandising, for Macys.com, Jeff Kantor, was named chairman of Macys.com effective Feb. 13. He will report to Gennette.
Said Macy’s Inc. Chairman Terry Lundgren,

“These changes reflect the strength of our senior-level talent and the teamwork that drives our company’s key growth strategies—My Macy’s localization, omni-channel and MAGIC Selling customer engagement.”—A.A.
