Nuvula Spring 2012

Nuvula, the first show of Concept Los Angeles Fashion Week on Oct. 13 at ACE Gallery in Los Angeles, opened to a theatrical start with an opera singer solo, dressed in a sweeping coat and feathered headdress. Nuvula’s looks that followed down the runway were influenced by performing arts such as ballet and dance, the circus, and rock ’n’ roll, according to the show notes.

Almost every piece was complicated and compacted multiple contrasting fabrics, colors and disparate themes into one outfit. Chunky checks and fine plaids on tops and dresses had a patchwork quilt–effect look and long dripping ombreacute;-colored fringe continued with the dramatic-entrance theme. The “abstract painting, psychedelic ’60s, dandyism and Elizabethan inspirations were seen in illustration prints, pop art–colored polka dots, 1920s flapper-like dress cuts, puffy sleeve details and high collars.

Guests across the whole front row fanned themselves with the sheets of show notes throughout the exhibition—the temperature was so hot in the gallery. Maybe the models were at least cool. Billed as an eco-conscious company, Nuvula used bamboo as a sustainable fabric “known for its intrinsic coolness,” among other properties.—Rhea CortadoPhotos from the event can be found here.
