Miriana Ojeda has been around the fashion block. She had a showroom in the California Market Center for 10 years. Then she moved across the street to The New Mart for 22 years, and now she is happily ensconced in a new 2,000-square-foot showroom in the Gerry Building.
The move was prompted by the economy, a need for a change and something else: a kitchen.
In Ojeda’s new space, she converted a bathroom into a kitchen where she can prepare food for buyers and sales staff during the various fashion markets, where people spend hours sifting through new collections and deciding what will be in their stores. “I’ve always wanted a kitchen. That is one thing I couldn’t do over at The New Mart because of the plumbing,” Ojeda said.
The other advantage are the curved windows in the 1947 Streamline Moderne building, which give her a view of the large ficus trees lining Los Angeles Street and a vista of the San Gabriel Mountains in the distance. “This is what made me select this particular showroom,” she said.
With the help of her husband, architect Ruben Ojeda, she turned her new showroom, with concrete floors and exposed ceilings, into a modern space. They created walls of bright colors that accent the seven contemporary labels she represents. More than half her lines are European—coming from Iceland, Belgium, Germany and France—and the rest are from the United States.
Those lines range from Elm Design, Karen Klein and Lunn by Lilith to Mes Soeurs et Moi, P. Taylor, Porto and Oska.
Wholesale price points average about $80 for the more moderate contemporary lines to $110 for the more upscale brands. Looks are sophisticated with sleek sensibilities and an artistic flair.—Deborah Belgum
