Wek Words
Alek Wek in Newsweek/The Daily Beast
Supermodel Alek Wek has a fantastic essay on her journey from South Sudan to the international catwalk in Newsweek (via The Daily Beast).
The essay is about the cultural attitudes towards food—depending whether you live in a rich country or a poor one. But Wek sprinkles the moving piece with charming anecdotes about her early days in fashion—like her response to a model scout who discovered her at age 14 at a London street fair: “What? You’re taking the mick out of me.”
Or an early attempt to navigate the runway: ”I remember at one rather avant-garde show, I had to wear clothes stained with fake blood and pretend to fight with another model on the catwalk while wearing towering heels. I just tried not to fall, to get to the end of the runway and back while on my feet.”
