Best Collective's Colorful Winter
Dale Rhodes bet against the market for his winter designs for Best Collective, his new label.
“I wanted to go against the norm for holiday,” he said. If winter is a time for blacks, grays and earth tones, he was going to take a risk with neon greens and yellows, teal blues, and forest greens, he said. His colorful bet paid off. Influential boutiques LASC and Ron Robinson at Fred Segal placed orders for Best Collective. Business was good enough to prompt Rhodes to hire two salespeople in the first week of November.
Rhodes worked in sales for the prominent Hurley surf label from 2000 to 2007. Until July, he served as partner of the O’Quinn surf brand. He resigned this summer to start Best Collective with Bryan Cole, who is the label's marketing director.
After leaving the surf label, Rhodes and Cole mulled over what the public wanted from clothing brands and decided people are looking for graceful simplicity with an edge. For the Malibu, Calif.–based Best Collective, the tops-based collection offers eight items with four colorways for winter. Best Collective makes fleece, V-neck T-shirts, crew tees, thermal shirts and T-shirts with colorful chambray and herringbone-fabric pockets. Wholesale price points range from $15 for a burn-out T-shirt to $35 for a hoodie. For more information, email sales@bestcollective.com.—Andrew Asch
