L.A. Port Job Goes to Fashion Ambassador
Cynthia Ruiz, known as City Hall’s ambassador to the local fashion industry, has been named deputy executive director of external affairs at the Port of Los Angeles.In her new job, she will help the port with its external relations and support its efforts regarding legislative policy, communications and regional economic opportunities.
“Cynthia’s depth of experience in community relations and familiarity with the important issues of Los Angeles will be extremely valuable for the port as we continue to strengthen relationships with port constituents and stakeholders,” said Geraldine Knatz, the port’s director. “Her government experience and go-to reputation for helping to make things happen in L.A. will be great assets to the port.”
Ruiz has been a frequent attendee of local fashion shows and events. She has been instrumental in bringing Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to more fashion happenings and meeting various apparel manufacturers.“I am honored and excited to join the Port of Los Angeles, which is a major economic engine for our city and the entire country,” Ruiz said.Over the years, Ruiz has had a number of city government jobs. Since 2003, she has served as president of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works, striving to get projects delivered on time and on budget. The five-member board is the city’s only full-time policymaking board, overseeing the activities of the city’s third-largest municipal agency, which employs more than 5,000 people.
She also chaired the city’s Environmental Youth Conference from 2007 to 2009 and has served on the LA-32 Neighborhood Council for three years.
Prior to working for the city, Ruiz worked as a rehabilitation counselor and as a mediator for the state’s Rehabilitation Bureau. She graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in counseling.—Deborah Belgum
