Los Angeles Fashion Week: Sue Wong
Sue Wong never disappoints, come spring, summer, fall or winter.
One of the doyennes of Los Angeles fashion put on a splashy display for her Fall 2011 collection of elegant evening gowns and cocktail dresses on March 18 at her Griffith Park–adjacent historic home once owned by silent-screen film star Norma Talmadge. Tall models strolled through the 1920s mansion in a fashion installation that took on the feeling of an afternoon cocktail party.
For Fall 2011, Wong took her inspiration from the classic work My Fair Lady, with its theme of transformation. “My Fair Lady is one of my favorite movies of all times. It starred a gorgeous Audrey Hepburn, who was the epitome of style and elegance of her era,” Wong said. “The dresses have an Edwardian sensibility.”
The dresses were heavy with rich fabrics such as satin, chiffon and lustrous lameacute;. They were encrusted with a number of elegant embellishments such as jet beading, ostrich feathers, organza petals, rich lace and hand-appliqueacute;d embroidered leaves. Predominant colors for the Fall 2011 collection were sienna, chocolate brown, black, cobalt blue, gold and a full-bodied red.
The evening gowns, dresses and the Venetian-style house called The Cedars left one feeling as if they had time-traveled to another era. —Deborah Belgum
