Los Angeles Fashion Week: Fremont

Exploration and new experiences were the central themes of the Fremont Fall 2011 collection. A video of models set against a mountain-scape was projected onto the runway backdrop to capture the essence of the theme. Designer Devin Carlson said the collection was inspired by the book “Into Thin Air.” He was reading the book, which is set on Mt. Everest, on one of his trips to India. Cold-weather detailing such as dry waxing gives the effect of fabric being frozen, and metallic treatments mimic ice hit with the glare of the mid-day sun. Colors such as blue were inspired by the color of frozen lakes and add to the feeling of being in a cold environment. Mixed knits referenced the colors that appear before hitting a tree line and animal prints referenced the wildlife that might be encountered. Fabrics such as chiffon and leather were luxe but wearable and often layered to create surface interest. For example, chiffon dresses were layered over knit leggings and sophisticated blazers worn with quilted leather shorts. For men, plaid shirts paired with an overcoat and trousers and quilted jackets with cotton pants.

Carlson said his vision is to create a cohesive collection that mirrors his current interest. “The aesthetic will always be progressing, but the overall idea is to create clothing that gives off an effortless sense of style and confidence, whether the inspiration comes from a book, a painting or time period, this is always the goal.”—N.
