Los Angeles Fashion Week: B.Scott
A free-spirited energy pervaded the B.Scott Fall 2011 collection. Titled “Every Man for Himself,” the collection expressed where designer Brandon Scott is in his own life.
“It’s just where I am,” he said. “You can’t really count on anyone but yourself to really do something with yourself. So that’s what I was going for,” he explained.
Scott took a fashion-forward approach combining technical elements with classic silhouettes. He combined fabrics within garments and added unexpected details such as zippers to a lapel or the side of a jacket. Seam details on the center front of a pant added a designer touch.
“I always want [to include] details in all of my garments that make it interesting,” Scott said. “I think it’s so much about many years of designing and designing and knowing what looks good and what doesn’t look good and how to add details where it counts.”
This season, Scott upped the fashion ante by adding wool and leathers to his fleece and denim repertoire. Rich shades of olive and purple helped balance out the dark grays and blacks that are the collection’s mainstay. Structured jackets and button-down shirts were layered with relaxed tees, hoodies and drop-crotch pants for a cool, casual sophistication. Leather bags and backpacks added the finishing touch.
Adding an air of mystery, Scott shrouded his models’ heads in black hoods, a detail he first tested in his lookbook. The designer said he covered the models’ faces in order to keep the focus on the clothing. —N. Jayne Seward
