A fashion show in Hell. Of course there were problems.
Los Angeles-based Junker Designs produced a show of its rock ’n’ roll fashions in Hell, Norway (the word Hell probably means something real nice in Norwegian,) on March 3. It was a perfect backdrop to the theme for their Fall 2011 collection; the Scandinavian black metal scene.
Upon their return to Los Angeles, Junker designers Giuliana Mayo and Tod Waters planned to produce another one of their fashion shows infamous for rock theatrics; lighting for a 2007 Junker show was produced by the bright headlights from a line of parked motorcycles, a 2006 show was held in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
But their most recent plans stopped short when the more outrageous pieces; denim trench coats with foot long collars, detailed with burnt denim and pieces of plastic monster heads, were held up in a low rung of hell; customs.
Undaunted, Junker went on with a Fashion Week party. Waters’ band Die Fast performed at West Hollywood club Viper Room March 17. Several models lurked around the club wearing Junker’s latest. Carla Harvey of metal band Butcher Babies wore a bra constructed out of two gold leaf baby doll faces. Rebecca Douglas wore leather hot pants detailed with pyramid studs, Sarah Roberts wore a black leather jacket with wide lapels. KROQ DJ Stryker hosted the party, wearing a Junker leather jacket which was constructed out of leather pants.
And if Junker’s aesthetic seems harsh, Mayo said her label is kind to the environment. Many of the label’s looks are repurposed from vintage fashions. But necessity is the mother of eco-invention here. “We couldn’t afford to buy new things,” Mayo said of the vintage clothes repurposed for Junker fashions. “It became part of our aesthetic.”
