More fashion boutiques are taking a gamble on downtown Los Angeles. On July 14 Uniqbill boutique produced a grand opening event in the midst of the revelry and cosmopolitan block party of the Downtown Art Walk, which is scheduled the second Thursday of every month.
Boutique co-owner Billie Summers said the mostly young, stylish crowds making up the massive crush of humanity that is Art Walk foot traffic convinced her and sister Houstina Summers to open their first boutique in downtown L.A. Located in the space of a former art gallery, Uniqbill is on the intersection of 6th Spring streets at 215 S. 6th St., Suite 116. Uniqbill’s focus will be one-of-a-kind fashions and local designers such as Holly Waas, Batani-Khalfani and Cowgirl Heaven, which is designed by Houstina Summers.
The opening night party included informal modeling of the local designers as well as the debut art show from Reena Tolentino. L.A.’s Spring Street is the main thoroughfare for Art Walk, and other fashion boutiques have opened on this street in the past 12 months. Stanton James opened in March. SixHundred opened in November. The Summers sisters mother got in the game too. She opened her self-named Lola Klein Gallery boutique at 1100 W. 7th St. in May.
