South Coast Plaza Beefs Up Store Roster

South Coast Plaza, the high-end shopping mall in Costa Mesa, Calif., is starting out the new year with a batch of new stores.

The 44-year-old shopping center, built by the Segerstrom family, already has more than 250 emporiums, including Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.

But there’s room for more. The company announced nine new stores—five exclusive to the Orange County area—will open.

The stores that will be unique to the area are Brunello Cucinelli, a high-end men’s and women’s cashmere brand; Diane von Fursternberg, contemporary women’s fashion from the New York designer; Longchamp, the Parisian label that makes luxury tote bags, luggage and accessories; Madewell, the J. Crew subsidiary that has an array of edgier T-shirts, denim, footwear and accessories; and Omega, the Swiss watchmaker.

Other new stores are Lululemon Athletica, which carries yoga-inspired athletic wear; Soma Intimates, seller of intimate apparel; Lego, known for its classic children’s building blocks; and Microsoft, which sells everything from software to hardware.

“This is just the beginning of a very exciting year of welcoming sought-after brands and concepts to our incredible family of retailers,” Debra Gunn Downing, executive director of marketing at South Coast Plaza, said in a statement.

Also coming to South Coast Plaza this spring is a new large-format XXI Forever by Forever 21. It is taking over part of the Sears store to gain entreacute;e into the upscale mall.
