Macy's to Grow Online Divisions

Cincinnati-based Macy’s Inc. will add approximately 725 new positions in New York, San Francisco and Atlanta as part of the retail giant’s plans to expand business with the Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s websites.

The retailer’s growth plan includes an “omnichannel strategy” in which customers can shop “seamlessly” in stores, online and on their mobile devices.

The retailer has plans to expand its Macys.com division in New York by 260 positions and its Macys.com division in San Francisco by about 200 positions. The company is expanding office space in both locations. Macys.com currently employs about 420 people in New York and more than 300 in San Francisco.

For its Bloomingdales.com division, the company plans to add about 115 positions in New York over the next two years. Currently, Macy’s employs about 200 people in its Bloomingdales.com division. The company is also looking for additional office space for the Bloomingdales.com division.

Macy’s Systems & Technology organization, which is the retailer’s e-commerce technology platform, will add about 150 positions over the two years. The positions will be based in Johns Creek, a suburb of Atlanta, where Macy’s currently employs more than 1,000 workers.

The company announced that, in total, the expansion of Macy’s online business will lead to the hiring of nearly 3,500 full-time, part-time and seasonal holiday associates over the next two years. These positions include a new online fulfillment center that is to be built near Martinsburg, W. Va., and the expansion of a fulfillment center near Portland, Tenn.

“These expansions to Macys.com and Bloomingdales.com represent investments in merchandising, marketing and site development, which complement ongoing improvements in systems infrastructure, fulfillment capacity and customer service,” said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy’s chairman, president and chief executive officer, in a statement.—Alison A. Nieder
