NRF Survey Tracks Consumers' Favorite Online Sellers
Amazon, Walmart and eBay took the three top spots of consumers’ favorite online retailers, according to a recent National Retail Federation survey.
The recent survey marks the fourth time the poll was conducted, and the survey’s top 12 spots for e-commerce remain unchanged. They were Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Best Buy, JC Penney, Target, Kohl’s, Google, Overstock, Sears, Macy’s and Old Navy.
The 2010 survey did show some differences from the 2009 survey further down in the ranking. Banana Republic debuted this year at number 48. Sam’s Club jumped nine spots to number 34. Plus-size retailer WomanWithin was bumped up to the 21st ranking in 2010 from the 29th spot in 2009. Value-oriented womenswear site Chadwick’s traveled from 40th to 32nd in the 2010 survey.
E-commerce has performed well during a tough economy. Online retail sales for the second quarter of 2010 were $32.9 billion, up 9 percent from the second quarter of 2009, according to Reston, Va.–based research firm comScore.
“Online retailers have proven they are up to the challenge of building a loyal customer base, and will continue to be preferred destinations for many as the Internet continues to mature,” said Susan Reda, editor of STORES Media, a division of the NRF, which published the survey in its September issue of STORES magazine.—Andrew Asch
