L.A. Fashion Week Spring 2011: Fremont
Fremont designer Devin Carlson found inspiration during his five trips to India in the last year, and world-traveler aesthetic was evident on the runway on Oct. 16 at Concept Fashion Week at the Spring Arts Tower in downtown Los Angeles.
Carlson described the look as a “safari in Asia.” But despite the headscarves, fishtail braids and Indian jewelry, the collection felt less like a direct interpretation of Indian culture and more of a reflection of what the Fremont customer would pack to wear while traveling in India.
Men’s styles hued to what Fremont does best: easy-to-layer jackets and crisp shirts paired with clean-and-lean trousers and shorts. For women, there were tops and dresses with unexpected cutouts, pleated shorts worn with breezy, boxy tops and plenty of dresses. Among the best was a strapless dress with a cascade of vertical pleating down the front and an airy dress made from overlapping layers that caught the breeze as the model walked the runway.—Alison A.
