Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa received the 2010 Humanitarian Award from the Green Youth Movement at the Green Initiative Humanitarian Fashion Show at L.A. Fashion Weekend. The eco-themed show, organized by The Gallery Los Angeles showroom in downtown Los Angeles, featured eco-friendly collections Emily Factor, Lizzie Parker and Puridee.
The mayor received the GYM award in recognition for his Million Trees Initiative. To date, 260,000 trees have been planted, according to the mayor, who said "I couldn't do it without young people." He urged the teens and children in the audience to "join GYM and make a difference in people's lives."
The Green Youth Movement is an organization of students founded to educate kids and teens about environmental issues and eco-friendly practices. Last year, former Vice President Al Gore received the GYM's Humanitarian Award.
