Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall '10: Sue Wong
Designer Sue Wong calls herself a maximalist because everything she does goes beyond the everyday world as we know it.
That was seen in her Fall 2010 collection of heavily embroidered and embellished dresses that seemed to swim in ostrich feathers, beaded highlights, organza petals, and Battenberg and filigree lace. The amount of handiwork that went into each dress defies the imagination.
For this season, Wong took her inspiration from Paris, where all things beautiful seem to find sustenance and life. “There is so much beauty in Paris,” said Wong, who staged her fashion presentation on March 16 at her office/studio in Los Angeles. “I think of Paris as a beautiful woman. I love the French style. hellip; They are so steeped in art.”
Wong’s gowns and dresses played up a woman’s curves with their V-neck silhouettes, empire waistlines or tucked-in waists. Many of the styles had a certain Art Nouveau look from an era when people dressed for elegant parties and never wore the same dress twice.
Black and gray were predominant colors in the design scheme as was brash red mixed with black. Moroccan turquoise studded with beads was another favorite theme. Plum, claret and olive gowns rounded out the color palette.—Deborah Belgum
