Hy & Dot: New From Rory Beca
Rory Edelman is expanding her Rory Beca clothing company in both up and down directions. For Spring 2010, Edelman launched the young contemporary line Hy & Dot. The $70–$160 retail prices are a step below her contemporary Rory Beca label. For Fall 2010, she also adds to the high-end capsule Rory Beca Gold Label, which retails for $400–$700.
“For Rory Beca, we were getting a demand for lower pricing and a younger market,” Edelman said. “I didn’t want to adjust the price on Rory Beca and drop everything. That’s where we came up with the idea for Hy & Dot, which is for the same type of girl but younger.”
Like a little sister of Rory Beca, Hy & Dot features trendy tops and bottoms with offbeat details. One tank is solid in the front and sheer lace in the back with an asymmetrical hem. A fitted miniskirt is ruched as if the wearer were bunching her skirt up to make it shorter. In comparison to the Rory Beca line, which is produced in Los Angeles, Hy & Dot is produced in China and India. The silk, cotton, wool blends, spandex and poly fabrications are not the same quality and are finished differently than the contemporary-priced Rory Beca line. However, the fashion sense and styling are still all Edelman’s.
“It’s the same kind of girl that’s wearing them,” Edelman said. “The kind of girl who loves to travel, have fun, loves to wear color and express herself in the way she dresses. She’s outgoing and she’s confident in her style.”
On the other side of the spectrum, Rory Beca Gold Label piles on the handwork and embellishment. A bustier dress with a paillette-covered poufy skirt and a beaded oversized sweater make for cute clothes to wear to swanky parties.
Edelman launched Rory Beca about three years ago and had become known for her tops and dresses that were on-trend, easy-to-wear and priced at $150–$400 retail. The Spring 2010 line was featured in Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion show.
