V-Moda: Many Rock 'n' Roll Styles From One Look
Designer Terri King custom-made clothes for some of the most famous rockers of the past 20 years, including Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson and Ozzy Osbourne. Yet when DJ and designer Val Kolton approached her about collaborating on a fashion line for his Los Angeles–based music-lifestyle company, V-Moda, King hoped to create something for the rocker and fashionista in everyone.
“I wanted to make high fashion affordable for people,” she said. They debuted the full V-Moda collection at the Jan. 15–19 run of the Los Angeles Fashion Market. The Fall 2010 collection offers 17 styles for men and 20 styles for women wholesale priced from $62 to $316. The V-Moda designers envisioned a line that could be sliced and diced to be appropriate and look rock ’n’ roll for every occasion.
Perhaps the emblematic look of the debut line is “The Convertible.” At first glance, it appears to be a long coat for women. But when unzipped, the coat becomes two garments: a jacket and a skirt. Unzip a few more pieces of “The Convertible,” and the top becomes a bolero coat, the sleeves can be worn as arm pieces and another piece can be used as a corset-like waist cincher.
V-Moda’s collection makes use of fabrics such as waxed denim and various technical fabrics. Other looks include a utilitarian-looking blazer, a pencil skirt and men’s T-shirts with nylon tape. For the color palette, V-Moda keeps it simple. It relies heavily on classic rock ’n’ roll black.
