L.A. Fashion Week Going Green
Eco-fashion shows are nothing new on the Los Angeles runways. Think leaf-strewn catwalks and organic cotton.
But for the first time, a Los Angeles ecological youth movement is presenting a fashion show highlighting eco-friendly designers.
The Green Youth Movement is partnering with The Gallery Los Angeles, headed by Mikey Koffman, to make fashionistas aware that you can be trendy and support sustainability at the same time. Koffman is an old hand at producing eco-friendly fashion shows at places such as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios. This show will be in time for the upcoming Los Angeles Fashion Week and will be held March 20 at Sunset Gower Studios. So far, designers Emily Factor and Lizzie Parker are confirmed as participants.
The Green Youth Movement, or GYM for short, was founded two years ago by 17-year-old Ally Maize, whose goal is to make elementary school students more aware of the environment and bring green curricula into the schools. It was Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" that inspired The Archer School for Girls student to start her nonprofit.
Proceeds from the fashion show, with tickets costing $25, will go for a reforestation project at the Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, located 20 miles north of San Bernardino, and for a reforestation project in Brazil.
