Made by Niki Debuts Slinkies
In 2006, British designer Niki McMorrough’s Made by Niki line of “Fresh Foundations” brought beauty into a shapewear market limited to nude biker-looking shorts and matronly girdles. Using vintage corsetry techniques, McMorrough’s version of the girdle in rich stretch satin and pretty lace has a sexy, modern look and, at the same time, effectively smooths the bum and flattens the tummy. Her new “Slinkies” line approaches body-slimming in a virtually seam-free medium.
“We had the fabric specially designed,” said McMorrough, who worked with a textile manufacturer that makes extreme-sportswear fabric. “It’s grippy on the inside and slippy on the outside so it stays in place on your body while letting your clothes drape just as they should. It’s treated with silver to make it antibacterial, anti-odor and thermo-regulating, and it’s moisture-wicking to keep you feeling fresh all day.”
McMorrough started Made by Niki in 2006 after she studied lingerie design at De Montfort University Leicester in Leicester, U.K. Her first designs were limited-edition, handmade lingerie sets that “respected the guilds and traditions of corsetieres and Savile Row tailors.” Today the brand offers the year-round Fresh Foundations line of “Magic Bum” girdles, shaping skirts, convertible bras, panties and suspender belts, and a seasonal fashion lingerie line.
The new Slinkies range includes a lighter-weight miniskirt girdle, a high thong that smooths the waistline and a mini-dress that is double-lined for “stronger sculpting power.” The boyshort is made to be worn invisibly underneath the girdle and mini-dress.
She designed the pieces, available in both fashion and neutral colors, with versatility in mind, to be “worn under or over your clothes, at the beach, the club or the shops. hellip; You can mix and match them to extend the range. For instance, wear the tank top with the leggings or pencil skirt to make a catsuit or pencil dress.”
