Oscar Costumes--and More--on Display at FIDM
Film costumes get their close-up at Art of Motion Picture Costume Design, the annual costume exhibition held at the Museum & Galleries at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles.
Now in its 18th year, the exhibition features costumes from more than 100 recent films—including several award-winners and nominees.
The exhibition will feature the work of several of this year’s Academy Award nominees for costume design, including Colleen Atwood’s designs for “Nine,” Sandy Powell’s costumes for “The Young Victoria,” Janet Patterson’s designs for “Bright Star” and Monique Prudhomme’s costumes for “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.”
Both Atwood and Powell are past Oscar winners. Powell won Academy Awards for costume design in 2005 for “The Aviator” and in 1999 for “Shakespeare in Love.” Atwood won Oscars in 2006 for “Memoirs of a Geisha” and in 2003 for “Chicago.”
Patterson has been nominated for Oscars for her costumes for “Oscar and Lucinda” in 1998, “The Portrait of a Lady” in 1997 and “The Piano” in 1994. Prudhomme is a first-time nominee. The costumes by Catherine Leterrier, also a first-time nominee, for “Coco Before Chanel,” will not be included in the show. But last year’s winner, Michael O’Connor, will have his designs for the Keira Knightley film “The Duchess” on display.
Other costumes in the exhibition include those from the films “A Single Man” (Arianne Phillips), “Aliens in the Attic” (Mona May), “Amelia” (Kasia Walicka Maimone), “An Education” (Odile Dicks-Mireaux), “Coraline” (Deborah Cook and Margaret Meyer), “Inglourious Basterds” (Anna B. Sheppard), “Julie & Julia” (Ann Roth), “The Last Station” (Monika Jacobs) and “Where the Wild Things Are” (Casey Storm).
The exhibition opens on Feb. 9 and runs through April 17. Admission to the exhibition is free, and the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Group tours are available by appointment only.
