Get Ready...It's Almost Time for the Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition
Oscar winning costumes for 2010 designed by Sandy Powell for "The Young Victoria."
With the box office race heating up over the holidays and the Golden Globes just around the corner, the stage is set in Hollywood for a glamorous award season. So, who will win the Oscar for best costume design?
From a fashion standpoint, there are plenty of contenders. Rodarte's Mulleavy sisters have made the headlines with the costumes they designed for "Black Swan," and Colleen Atwood's costumes for "Alice In Wonderland," inspired plenty of fashion trends and designers this year.
On February 8, costume fans will be able to place their own vote. The Fashion Institute of Design Merchandising's "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" exhibition will open on February 8. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to view costumes from the big screen up close and personal. With as many as 100 costumes from more than 20 films on display, it's an elaborate retrospective of the year in costume. The exhibition which is in its 19th year, has become a "must see" for fashion insiders, students and costume design and film fans alike.
It is a rare opportunity to see many of these costumes. The annual exhibition, which is free to the public, is the only one of its kind in the world which celebrates the work of costume designers including Oscar-winners and nominees. This season expect to see costumes from "Shutter Island" created by last year's Oscar winner Sandy Powell; Costume Designer Jeffrey Kurland's costumes for "Inception," and Milena Canonero's costumes for "The Wolfman."
The exhibition runs from February 8 to April 30 at the FIDM Museum Galleries at 919 S. Grand Ave. in downtown Los Angeles. For more details go to www.fidm.edu.
