Bijan Honored by Otis
Dr. Bijan Pakzad
Dr. Bijan Pakzad is perhaps best known by his first name--or, possibly, his 1,000-watt smile. For years, his face and signature logo greeted visitors and locals from billboards across Los Angeles. As chairman and designer of House of Bijan, Dr. Pakzad has built a luxury brand out of his “by-appointment-only” showroom on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills for more than 35 years. The House of Bijan has created custom menswear, jewelry, accessories, and fragrances for men and women, as well as car and airplane interiors for a well-heeled clientele that reportedly includes world leaders, A-list actors and other designers.
On May 8, Dr. Pakzad will receive the Otis Design Legend Award at the Otis College of Art and Design 28th Annual Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Otis will also award alumnus Tyrus Wong with the Otis Alumni Achievement Award. A 1932 graduate of Otis College, the nearly 100-year-old Wong worked as a film production illustrator at both Disney and Warner Bros. studios, including working on such landmark films as “Bambi,” “The Wild Bunch” and “Rebel Without a Cause.”
The two will receive their awards at Otis’ annual show, which will feature a runway show of student collections designed under mentorship of several well-known designers and brands, including Robert Rodriguez, Tadashi Shoji, Todd Oldham, Trina Turk, Lilly Pulitzer, Koi Suwannagate, Todd Magill for Anthopologie, Patricia Marquis for Cosabella, John Cherpas for Hurley, Isabel and Ruben Toledo for Patagonia, Michael Maccari for Armani Exchange, and Robin Piccone and JonMikel Rodriguez for O’Neill.
The event is the design school’s largest fund-raiser for its scholarship fund. For information about tickets, visit www.otis.edu/sbs or call (310) 665-6858.
